Ginger (Lacki) Wankewycz, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, has been folding origami creations since the age of eight. During her college years she also developed a keen interest in the art of printmaking. Now she displays her expertise in both those artistic fields and sells her fine art prints, origami designs, and jewelry in many art and craft shows in Northern Ohio. Since Graduating from Baldwin-Wallace College (Berea, Ohio) with a degree in Fine Arts in 2001, Ginger has received awards from numerous juried art exhibits, and has had her work featured in many prominent Cleveland area galleries and several art publications. She has been active in community endeavors such as the Berea Arts Fest and has taught classes in both origami and printmaking at various schools, community centers, and libraries around the area. Since she enjoys doing what others would consider to be “tedious” work, from folding the tiniest of origami cranes to spending hours of painstaking cutting and measuring to create a huge 24 x 36” linoleum block print, Ginger makes attention to detail her primary concern. When creating an image, she likes to think about the individual sections of the piece and how they relate to the work as a whole, and feels that each and every section of a work should be able to function on its own. The paper Ginger uses is very important to her work--—both in her prints and her origami. She selects a variety of imported and traditional papers (many handmade or hand-printed). This, combined with much of her imagery, indicates a strong Asian influence throughout her portfolio. More recently, Ginger has been creating origami jewelry out of fine silver, using Precious Metal Clay. The medium has allowed her to expand the repertoire of items she creates and has given her a chance to develop as an artist, utilizing skills in jewelry making as well as ceramics. Ginger considers her artwork to be an extension of her personality. “Since people often view my pieces without having the opportunity to meet the person behind them, I want to make sure that I am giving them the best impression possible.” Currently working out of her Cleveland home studio, Ginger is also a member of the Berea Fine Arts Club, Origami USA, and the Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild.
